Scientists discover new filter to convert salt water to fresh water

A recent BBC report ( late March 2017) stated that scientist have discovered a new type of filter that quickly and easily filters the  salt water and converts it into fresh drinking water, and the hope is it can now deliver water to hundreds of millions of people who currently have no access to clean drinking water.
This is a remarkable invention in and of itself .

But we have a situation with the Faukashima plant in Japan, spilling 300 tons of radioactive waste everyday. Has anyone considered how this filter is going to remove these deadly contaminants from the salt water prior to giving it to the populace.

Does anyone out there have a solution to this dire situation?? Please enlighten us all if you can come up with a solution.
